To get even more softness from your flash, swivel the flash around so it will reflect off the wall behind you. There has to be a wall behind you. The wall acts as a huge softbox when the light hits it. You will get very nice results from doing this. Another trick is aiming the flash right at the ceiling with no angle. This also provides very nice softness.
